Libya
Libya’s coast guard intercepted a dinghy carrying more than one hundred African migrants on Monday.
The UN refugee agency says nearly one thousand people have been rescued over the past few days in the Mediterranean, including unaccompanied children.
One migrant said she paid the equivalent two thousand euros.
“I know people die in this sea, but I know my case would be different, I know I would succeed. The money I paid to embark on this trip is 500,000 Naira which is about two-thousand euros”, said Matza Samwe.
“I want to go to Europe because of the fighting in my hometown, so I tried to escape and come here and want to go to Europe to secure my life,” added Tarsen, a rescued Migrant from Ghana. The International Organization for Migration said earlier this month, more than one hundred people are believed to have died in four shipwrecks between Italy and Libya which is becoming the preferred sea route for migrants to Europe.
